Have I told you I'm opening a new school next year?

Frisco is opening six new campuses next year and I have the privilege of opening the library at one of the two new elementary schools. After four fabulous years at Bright, you'll find me in the library at Purefoy Elementary soon.

As I'm packing up my office and getting ready for the exciting challenge of opening a brand-new library, I want to say thank you to all of my wonderful friends at Bright Elementary. The students, staff, and parents have made the last four years (and my first time as a librarian) a rewarding and enjoyable experience that I will never forget. It will be a change not hearing "Bright Sunshiney Day" play every morning as we start our day together.

A special thank you to my fabulous library aide Mrs. Green! You have been a great friend and co-worker and I will miss seeing you everyday!

Mrs. Garavaglia will be the new librarian at Bright. Be on the lookout for Mrs. G next year, she's got some great ideas for library activities, you will love her!

I've read 75/100 (bold) and already have a few others from the list waiting on my bookshelf. Too bad I only read the first Harry Potter - reading them all would put me at 80 %.

Fun Times at TLA

I was fortunate enough to attend TLA this year in San Antonio. Despite rain every day, the convention was fabulous - I had a lot of fun and learned a ton!

TLA is the annual conference of the Texas Library Association and overflows with workshops, author talks, vendor exhibits and more. There were excited librarian everywhere!

A few of the things I learned at TLA...

On Wednesday I heard comedian/actor/author Michael Ian Black speak at the University of North Texas in Denton as part of their amazing Fine Arts Series. He spoke about his life and career and the silly things his kids do.

We've been enjoying the works of Dan Yaccarino in the library lately. He is the author and/or illustrator of dozens of great books for children including Circle Dogs, Lawn to Lawn, and The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau - a biography that's on the new Bluebonnet Reading List.

Dan Yaccarino is also an artist and TV producer. You might have seen some of his creations on TV if you've ever watched Oswald, The Backyardigans, or Willa's Wild Life. All his creations are whimsical, colorful, and perfect for the young at heart.

The 2010 Bluebonnet Bash was a smashing success! Nearly 100 students in 3rd-5th grade celebrated with us on the Friday before spring break. We had a great time playing games, eating blue popcorn, and picking prize books to keep.

And, the best news of all is you can start reading the NEW Bluebonnet Books now! The 2010-2011 Reading List is now on display. Which book are you going to read first?

A Special Visit from our Congressman

We had a special day last Friday when our local U.S. representative Congressman Sam Johnson stopped by the library to visit with our 4th and 5th grade.

He read House Mouse, Senate Mouse and spoke briefly about his job as a representative and his past. We learned that he splits his time equally between Washington, D.C. and North Texas, traveling back and forth every week. He gets piles and piles of mail and email daily too, and his office responds to every single note. We were very impressed with Congressman Johnson and felt privileged to have a true American hero here to visit!

Summary: The Squeaker of the House and the Senate Mouse-jority Leader have a big job to do: Miss Tuftmore's second grade class in Moussouri has written Congress with an idea for a law to declare a National Cheese! But in a big country, it's not always easy to get everyone to agree on an important isssue.

Do you like telling stories? Can you tell a good joke?

You should audition for the Frisco Library's Lone Star Storytelling Festival!

The Frisco Public Library is looking for storytellers between the ages of 8 and 18 to be a part of next year's Lone Star Storytelling Festival right here in Frisco on October 9th, 2010.

Students selected for the festival will:
· Perform during a storytelling concert at the Festival in October
· Share the stage with nationally known storytellers
· Have lots of fun!

All you have to do is record yourself telling a short story on tape or DVD and bring it to the public library by May 7th with the student audition form. Bright students can choose to make an audition tape with Mrs. Hamilton on April 23rd - sign up in the library to participate.

Favorite author Theodor Seuss Geisel had a birthday on March 2nd and we've been celebrating all week in the library with puzzles and contests. Tune into VBrick on Friday to see special people from our district, like Dr. Reedy, read their favorite Dr. Seuss books too.

Schools across America celebrate Dr. Seuss each year with NEA's Read Across America Day. It's not too late to celebrate, checkout a Dr. Seuss book and try a challenge puzzle the next time you're in the library.

Book-Based Movie: The Lightning Thief

One of my favorite books is now a movie. The Lightning Thief is an exciting fantasy series about kids who are descended from Greek gods and possess unusual powers, it is the first book in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

I first read The Lightning Thief back in 2006, when it was on the Bluebonnet Reading List and the author visited us here at Bright. Since then I've read the entire series and recommend it to anyone who loves fast-paced fantasy books and adventure.

2x2 News

I'm excited to share some fun news with my blog readers: I'm going to be on the 2x2 Committee!

Starting in April and for the next two years, I'll be working with a group of five librarians from all across Texas to pick great books for the 2011 and 2012 2x2 Reading Lists.

The 2x2 List highlights 20 outstanding new books for children from age 2 to grade 2. Books on the 2x2 List encourage early literacy and are perfect for children and adults to enjoy together. Here at Bright we celebrate the 2x2 List with a special reading program and coloring boot.

The 2x2 Committee is part of the Texas Library Association's Children's Round Table and is made up of school and public librarians.

Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix (SLJ: Grades 4-8) - an exciting adventure story that will keep you guessing.

Summary: When thirteen-year-olds Jonah and Chip, who are both adopted, learn they were discovered on a plane that appeared out of nowhere, full of babies with no adults on board, they realize that they have uncovered a mystery.

Thoughts: I read Found after a recommendation from another librarian and I am hooked. I don't want to give away too much information, but if you like fast-paced books and wondering what will happen next give this new series a try.

Thank you to for supporting our book fair!

We raised close to $2,000 for the PTA and library despite having to cancel our family night and losing a shopping day to snow and ice. A special thank you to all our parent volunteers and teachers for making our spring book fair a success.

Thinking Professionally

Thought I'd share some of the professional resources I like best. As a librarian and educator, I consider myself a lifelong learner and get excited when I understand something new - and I love helping others (teachers, parents, AND children) learn and grow too.

Found through Frisco ISD and personal study, here are some of my favorite professional resources right now...

Lester Laminack: Author of Learning Under the Influence of Language and Literature explores the importance of reading aloud for student learning and provides a resource for specific titles to share with children.

Dr. Tony Wagner: Author of The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner uses research and a look at the working world to focus student learning on "7 Survival Skills for the 21st Century."

According to Wagner, before graduating, students should have skills for:
1. Problem-solving and critical thinking
2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence
3. Agility and adaptability
4. Initiative and entrepreneurship
5. Effective written and oral communication
6. Accessing and analyzing information, and
7. Curiosity and imagination

We met Susan Stevens Crummel!

On Tuesday Mrs. Green and I were lucky enough to hear author Susan Stevens Crummel speak at Frisco's Early Childhood School. Mrs. Crummel is the author of several great books for kids - and just won the Texas Bluebonnet Award for Help Me, Mr. Mutt!, a selection on this year's Bluebonnet Reading List and the book that won the most votes here at Bright too.

Mrs. Crummel presented to several hundred students in PreK and had puppets and participation to keep everyone interested. We learned that several of the animals in Help Me, Mr. Mutt! and her other books are based on real animals and events. Mrs. Crummel writes books with her sister, Janet Stevens, an artist who illustrates many books for children.

Kids here at Bright love reading about Greg, the Wimpy Kid, a graphic novel series by Jeff Kinney. These are definitely the most requested books in our library. Wimpy Kid started as an online comic on FunBrain.com, and was so popular it was turned into a published book series. You can still read the 1st book online here.

Bluebonnet Voting Day is Monday, January 25th!

Students that have completed at least 5 Bluebonnet Buzzes are eligible to vote and will be announced at Good Morning Bright. Voting stations will be set up in the library all day.

If you haven't turned in at least 5 buzzes it's not too late - submit them online by the end of the day TOMORROW and you can vote too!

Don't forget - if you don't vote for your favorite book, you won't be invited to the Bluebonnet Bash on March 12th.

Home of the Brave by Karen Applewhite (SLJ: Grades 5-7) - a novel in verse about a boy refugee from Africa adjusting to life in America.

Summary: Kek, an African refugee, is confronted by many strange things at the Minneapolis home of his aunt and cousin, as well as in his fifth-grade classroom, and longs for his missing mother, but finds comfort in the company of a cow and her owner.

My Thoughts: Mrs. Green read this book first and couldn't stop talking about it - she loved it and so did I. It made me think about how fortunate I am and all the things I sometimes take for granted here in America. The main character, Kek, had to move across the world all by himself and had never even slept in a bed before he got to Minnestoa! This book is a real page-turner, it's a quick read that you'll be thinking about for days (and it's one of the new bluebonnet books too).

This book is also available on Google Books - a collection of over 7 million texts online. Sometimes the whole book is posted, sometimes just a portion. Some of Home of the Brave is online, so if you can't get to the library click this link or use the viewer below to read anytime.

I just finished two new library books perfect for students and teachers.

Punctuation Celebration by Elsa Knight Bruno, illustrated by Jenny Whitehead (SLJ: Grades 1-4) - a poetry collection that makes punctuation fun!

Summary: Illustrations and whimsical poems introduce young readers to punctuation, with commas that help a train slow down, colons that introduce lists, quotation marks that tell people what to do, and more.

My Thoughts: This book is cute and clever - the little poems make the subject interesting, and even funny! The illustrator's great drawings added to the story too and helped to explain the topic. This book would be great for classroom teachers to share with students for Conventions as well.

Spot the Plot: A Riddle Book of Book Riddles by J. Patrick Lewis, illustrated by Lynn Munsinger (SLJ: Grades K-2) - a quick collection of literature-inspired riddles.

Summary: An illustrated collection of thirteen poems, each of which poses a riddle about a familiar story.

My Thoughts: This is a creative collection of poems that students will enjoy. If you don't already know the familiar tales included, you'll definitely want to read them after hearing the author's riddle clues. This book would be perfect as an interactive read-aloud or as a format for students to write their own book riddles.

Here's a riddle I especially liked from the Spot the Plot:

11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass (Booklist: Grades 4-6) - a book about birthdays and friendship with a magical side.

Summary: After celebrating their first nine same-day birthdays together, Amanda and Leo, having fallen out on their tenth and not speaking to each other for the last year, prepare to celebrate their eleventh birthday separately but peculiar things begin to happen as the day of their birthday begins to repeat itself over and over again.

My Thoughts: I enjoyed this book and really identified with the characters, it reminded me that sometimes it is pretty hard to be a kid. The author did a great job of making me care about Amanda and Leo, and helped me understand their frustrations. I can't wait to read more books by Ms. Mass soon!

The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney (SLJ: Grades PrsS-3) - a version of the famous fable about an unlikely pair.

Summary: In this wordless retelling of an Aesop fable, an adventuresome mouse proves that even small creatures are capable of great deeds when he rescues the King of the Jungle.

My Thoughts: This book is beautiful. I love the detailed illustrations and the wordless format. Jerry Pinkney is one of my favorite author/illustrators, so I knew I could count on this book to be great!

Mr. Pinkney usually works as an artist and illustrator and has published over 100 books! Mr. Pinkney has illustrated books by favorite authors Patricia Polacco, Patricia McKissack, Julian Lester and more. He also publishes versions of favorite folktales and fables too.

I met Jody Feldman!

On Friday I was privileged to hear author Jody Feldman speak at Smith Elementary. Mrs. Feldman is the author of The Gollywhopper Games, a selection on this year's Bluebonnet Reading List.

I learned that The Gollywhopper Games was inspired by a student who wanted to read a book similar to Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A lover of games, she decided to add a game and puzzle-centered twist to the story. Mrs. Feldman also shared that she didn't like writing as a child - go figure!

If you like reading fun and exciting books you should read The Gollywhopper Games.

Summary: Twelve-year-old Gil Goodson competes against thousands of other children at extraordinary puzzles, stunts, and more in hopes of a fresh start for his family, which has been ostracized since his father was falsely accused of embezzling money from Golly Toy and Game Company.

Guess Again! by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Adam Rex (SLJ: Grades PreS-2nd) - a funny story by a great new author.

Summary: A book that will keep you guessing again, and again, and again...

My Thoughts: Mac Barnett and Adam Rex did a great job on this quick and entertaining read. Written in rhyme with funny solutions to obvious questions, this book is great for all grade levels.

Texas Book Festival Photos

Have you been to the Texas Book Festival before? It's held every year in Austin for book-lovers from across the state. The festival was founded by former librarian Laura Bush when she was the First Lady of Texas.

This year I took my first trip to the festival and had a great time. I was able to see children's authors Mac Barnett, Liz Scanlon, and Jon Scieszka and adult authors Christian Lander, Bill Scheft, and Will Clarke speak - they were all well-spoken and funny and left me wanting to read their books!

Book Character Costumes

We had a blast at the Fall Meet & Greet last night. It was fun to see everyone dressed up in creative book-inspired costumes.

I was Elizabeth from The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch. In this story Elizabeth's clothes are destroyed by a dragon and all she has to wear is a paper bag - an outfit that does not impress selfish Prince Ronald.

Mrs. Green dressed up as Josh, the main character from Baghead by Jarrett Krosoczka. In this book a boy goes through a regular day while wearing a bag on his head, read the story to find out why.

We need ideas for next year! Let me know a great costume idea next time you're in the library.

Do you know how to place a hold on a library book? Putting a book on hold means you want to be on a waiting list to read a book that is checked out. Follow the directions below to put an item on hold from ANY computer.

How to place a hold:

Open the library catalog (it's labeled "Bright Library HIP" on school computers).
Search for book you want to check out.
Click the “Request Item” button on the right. Do NOT click “Add to My List” - it won’t work.
When prompted, enter your ID number (lunch number).
Click "Request" until the "Request Confirmation" screen appears. You do not need to enter comments.
Wait for your turn to enjoy this book.

If you check your account, the book will now appear on the “Holds” screen. The number will tell you how many people are in front of you in line. When the book is available the library will email your teacher and a "Hold Notification" screen will pop up the next time you try to check out in the library.

I was lucky enough to attend the Plano Library Expo on Friday and had a great time. Teaching and technology expert David Warlick was the keynote speaker and one of his themes was making yourself a master learner. As a librarian consider myself a life-long learner and work to instill a love of learning (and reading) in all the students here at Bright.

How the idea of literacy is changing as technology becomes more available and integrated in education

Confirmation of the importance of reading aloud and that students should hear literature read aloud at least 6 times a day!

Autumn is here - it's getting cooler, leaves are changing, and football season is underway.

Want to read a great book about the fall? Try one of these...

Autumn: An Alphabet Acrostic by Steven Schner (SLJ: K-3rd) - Describes the autumn season, with its animals, rain, cold winds, and harvested food. When read vertically, the first letters of the lines of text spell related words arranged alphabetically, from "acorn" to "zero."

It's Fall by Linda Glaser (SLJ: PreS-1st) - A child observes the many changes that occur in nature with the coming of the fall season. Includes suggested activities.

Leaves by David Ezra Stein (SLJ: PreS-2nd) - A bear who has never experienced autumn before is puzzled by the falling leaves, unsure whether he should try to put them back or use them as a bed for a nap.

The Little Yellow Leaf by Carin Berger (SLJ: PreS-2nd) - A yellow leaf is not ready to fall from the tree when autumn comes, but finally, after finding another leaf still on the tree, the two let go together.

Bright Loves Jarrett Krosoczka!

Today was a special day at Bright, we enjoyed an awesome author visit from Jarrett Krosoczka. We heard about Mr. Krosoczka's life as a writer and artist and learned that he had to set goals and work toward them to be successful. We discovered the inspiration behind many of his books and enjoyed a preview for his new Lunch Lady series too.

I'm reading... Nubs

Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, and a Miracle by Major Brian Dennis, Kirby Larson, and Mary Nethery - an amazing story about a little dog from Iraq.

Summary: Nubs, an Iraqi dog of war, never had a home or a person of his own. He was the leader of a pack of wild dogs living off the land and barely surviving. But Nubs's life changed when he met Marine Major Brian Dennis. The two formed a fast friendship, made stronger by Dennis's willingness to share his meals, offer a warm place to sleep, and give Nubs the kind of care and attention he had never received before. Nubs became part of Dennis's human "pack" until duty required the Marines to relocate a full 70 miles away--without him. Nubs had no way of knowing that Marines were not allowed to have pets. So began an incredible journey that would take Nubs through a freezing desert, filled with danger to find his friend and would lead Dennis on a mission that would touch the hearts of people all over the world. Nubs and Dennis will remind readers that friendship has the power to cross deserts, continents, and even species.

Get excited - our first author visit is almost here! On Monday, September 28th author Jarrett Kroscoza will be at Bright to speak to all students. He will share stories from his work as an author and illustrator and teach us about the writing process.

Parents are welcome to join us in the café on at 8:30 with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, or at 9:45 with Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade.

The fall book fair is here! Travel down to the library all week to view great new books on sale at the Scholastic Book Fair.

We're open daily from 7:30-3:15, closing Friday at 11 am. Stop by the library Thursday night after the 6:30 pm Snake Encounter show and PTA meeting and you could win a gift certificate for a free book!

We are collecting donations for $1 for Books all week too. Your $1 donation is matched by Scholastic for free books for students in need at our school and around the US. We look forward to seeing you at the book fair soon!

This challenge is easy...

Read a book that has won the Caldecott Medal or is a Caldecott Honor Book - an annual award for the best illustrated picture book of the year.

Complete the challenge sheet (print one here or pick one up in the library). Be sure your picture is neat and colorful before turning it in. All your friends and teachers will see your artwork hanging on our Caldecott Wall of Fame.

Penny from Heaven by Jennifer L. Holm (SLJ: Grade 5-8) - a novel set in the 1950s told from a young girl's point of view.

Summary: As she turns twelve during the summer of 1953, Penny gains new insights into herself and her family while also learning a secret about her father's death.

My Thoughts: I thought this was a great read, I love Penny's story and how she handled herself during her unexpected accident. I think kids and adults will both enjoy this book.

Looking for an intriguing read this summer? Give Penny from Heaven a try or read one of Jennifer Holm's other great books: Boston Jane, Our Own May Amelia, or the much-loved Baby Mouse graphic novel series.

It's TV Turn Off Week, and if you're like me you love TV. Challenge yourself to go all week, April 20th-26th, without watching any television. Play outside, learn a new game, or read books instead. Visit Barnes&Noble Stonebriar for fun this week too, they've got family reading nights every night from 6-8pm, and are hosting visiting author Erin Hunter, of the Warrior Cats series, on Sunday too.

I'm planning lots of extra reading this week instead of watching TV. Some of the books I'd like to finish include...

The 39 Clues: Maze of the Bones by Rick Riordan (SLJ: Grades 4-7) - an excited new mystery series that has a matching webpage with great games and contests.

Summary: Amy and Dan, members of the powerful Cahill family, try to uncover the thirty-nine clues which will reveal the secrets of their lineage and find out what really happened to their parents.

The Gollywhopper Games by Judy Feldman (SLJ: Grades 4-8) - a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired book and a selection on the new bluebonnet reading list.

Summary: Twelve-year-old Gil Goodson competes against thousands of other children at extraordinary puzzles, stunts, and more in hopes of a fresh start for his family, which has been ostracized since his father was falsely accused of embezzling money from Golly Toy and Game Company.

Someone Named Eva by Joan M. Wolf (SLG: Grades 5-8) - a historical fiction story and another new bluebonnet nominee.

Summary: From her home in Lidice, Czechoslovakia, in 1942, eleven-year-old Milada is taken with other blond, blue-eyed children to a school in Poland to be trained as "proper Germans" for adoption by German families, but all the while she remembers her true name and history.

Library Mouse is a great picture book by Daniel Kirk about Sam, a mouse that lives at the public library. In the book Sam writes fun little books and encourages us all to find the writer inside ourselves.

You can be like Sam by bringing your own little book down to the library soon. We can't wait to read them! The 2009 Bluebonnet Bash was held on Friday, March 13th for over 75 readers in 3rd-5th grade. We had a great time playing games, eating blue popcorn, and picking prize books to keep. Remember you only have to turn in five bluebonnet buzzes to earn an invitiation to the party, you can even start reading the 2010 Bluebonnet Books now. Hope to see you at next year's bash!

Ahoy Matey!! Over 130 students turned in Six Flags Reading Logs for their free ticket and Paws Points - let's see how many want a trip to Pirate Pete's Treasure Chest. Completing our new Paws Pirate Reading Log during March and April to win.

Can you help Pirate Pete find his treasure?

Pirate Pete has lost his treasure and needs your help finding it. To assist him, read one book from each genre listed on the treasure map. Students earn 60 paws points for each genre read, plus as a thank you from Pirate Pete for your help, come to the library after your log is complete and pick a prize from his treasure chest.

The children of Texas have spoken and the 2009 Bluebonnet Award Winner is One Potato, Two Potato by Cynthia DeFelice - a fun book about a little old couple who find a pot with magical powers. Over 150,000 students participated in the bluebonnet program this year in Texas, that's a lot of reading! The 75 students that participated at Bright get to attend our Bluebonnet Bash on Friday, March 13th to play games, eat popcorn, and get a sneak peak at the 2010 reading list - see you soon.

Over 75 students from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade voted for their favorite bluebonnet book last week on the computer and with over 30% of the vote the winner at Bright is Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. The bluebonnet votes from Bright have been sent on to Austin, we'll find out who the statewide winner is soon.

If you haven't read Lawn Boy yet - check it out soon! It's about a kid who starts a lawn mowing business has ends up having an exciting summer with many unexpected events.

A special visitor stopped by Bright on Monday morning. Shirley Smith Duke, author of No Bows!, spoke to students in PreK, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade on January 26th. We learned more about the how books are made and where authors get ideas, plus tips for making our writing sparkle. Thanks for a great visit everyone!

It's Bluebonnet Time!

Attention all 3rd-5th graders:

Bluebonnet Voting Day is this Friday! Students that are eligible to vote will recieve ballots on the 21st to select their favorite book from this year's nominees.

If you haven't turned in at least 5 buzzes it's not too late - get them all to the library by the end of the day on Thursday and you can vote!

Don't forget - if you don't vote for your favorite book, you won't be invited to the Bluebonnet Bash in March.

The Bright Book Club is going strong this fall with 5th grade. Check out some of the great books we've been reading:

A Dog for Life by L.S. Matthews (SLJ: Grades 4-8).

Summary: John, finds that his dog, Mouse, is scheduled to go to the pound and decides to run away and find his uncle, who may be able to help him.

Replay by Sharon Creech (SLJ: Grades 5-8)

Summary: While preparing for a role in the school play, twelve-year-old Leo finds an autobiography that his father wrote as a teenager and ponders the ways people change. Includes the text for the play, "Rumpopo's Porch."

The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker (SLJ: Grades 4-6)
